Fawn Forlorn
2021
A 'direct lift' of a freehand paper-cut realised as two laser cut inlays to compare and contrast with 'Not Sun Nor Swell' which uses a combination of both freehand and digital drawing techniques.
The Missing Piece Participatory Jigsaw
2021
I created this participatory jigsaw for my audience to engage with the materials I have used in my artwork and to become an active participant in the exhibition.
Not Sun Nor Swell
2021
Laser-cut artwork based on the myth of Icaurus and the heart of my end of year exhibition. It combines hand cut artwork combined with digital shapes that could not be produced by hand. It is in part a synthesis of hand made and digital elements.
Posters and Publicity
2021
These are the images I created using a variety of design software to publicise my projects.
Exhibition Videos
2021
These are films of my MA creative practice exhibitions including Shadow Reflection, the masters group show at the Victoria Shopping Centre and the Artists Market. I curated Shadow Reflection, took an active lead artist role in the group show and managed the art market.
Shadow Reflection Catalogue
2021
As part of my themed group show I curated at Henshaws Arts and Crafts Centre I created a simple Zine style Catalogue for the event. I worked closely with the artists to present their work and tell their story.

Feva Public Papercutting Workshop
2021
I created this paper cutting workshop for beginners using templates based on my designs. I provided all materials and tools including a small frame to house the completed design.  The workshop had 12 participants and was part of the Feva arts festival in Knaresborough.
Harrogate Theatre Commission
2021
Working in collaboration with two other artists I am creating a number of distinct artworks planned to raise awareness of the theatre during its closure and to celebrate its planned reopening. Three Papercuts and one digital mosaic will form the core of my work.
Op Art Practice
2021
I am building a series of Op Art inspired practice pieces to specifically investigate figure and ground.
Cyanotypes
2020
I began exploring developing cyanotypes on April 21st 2020. The first print 'Shadow of a Shadow' is a photograph of my shadow on tree bark. I printed a negative on tracing paper and then placed it on the cyanotype paper in the sun to produce the final image. I am experimenting using papercuts directly onto cyanotype as well as digitally processing images before using the cyanotype process as a printing medium. Shadows are a central theme of my work.
Birch Bark Cuts
2021
Through research I discovered that some of the earliest proto-papercuts were Amate bark pulp papercuts of Mesoamerica. This inspired me to begin experimenting with birch tree bark. I plan to experiment with other natural materials in the near future.
Nightjar Night-Jar Commission
2020
From the 8th – 17th June as part of one of our new follow on projects Nature Revealed: Tracks, Traces and Trails, the Nightjar Nights series features new works from writers Sara Hudston, Anita Roy, and Land Lines’ own David Higgins, with supporting materials from Tim Kohler at Natural England. There will be a special guest piece from naturalist, author and critically acclaimed birder, Stephen Moss, and many of our brilliant creative works will be accompanied by artworks from Douglas Black and Katie Marland. There will also be a chance for you to get involved – you can download a printable nightjar ‘papercut’ and colouring sheet by artist Douglas Black. https://landlinesproject.wordpress.com/nightjar-nights/

Work for Sale
2021
This portfolio inside a portfolio begins to address work that I am producing to sell. I am experimenting with kits, framed papercuts and other prints. My commissions are proving far more popular than my commercial exhibition pieces so its an interesting page for me to consider.
3D shapes & Laser cuts
2021
I'm very interested in the possibilities of production using laser cutting CNC technology. I can repeat and alter the size of my work as well as digitally refining designs before reprinting. I also want to encourage myself to realise this technology as an artistic tool. To move forwards from reproduction and employ the technology as a means to an artistic medium in its own right.
Film & Animation
2020
I have created stop motion, shadow and digital animations. These are early stage practice pieces but I am interested in combining my various disciplines through shadow performances or animation.
Instalation
2021
Experimenting with my images in larger spaces through the use of old projectors and shadows. I plan to add video projectors with moving images as I continue my research.
Scrofula Man
2021
I collaborated with ceramicist Helen Hopper a fellow student from MA creative practice in my first papercut taken from still life. It focused me on producing depth through representing the figure and ground of the subject and the space. I also used the waste paper from the first cut to create a negative image of the original.

Sculpture Commission
2019
My design was selected for the Harrogate temporary winter sculpture project. It was displayed for three months in the town centre. Working with students and college staff we created a kinetic sculpture and a soundscape that would play each evening.
Four Leaves Miniatures
2020
These were originally designed by hand using a scalpel on card for the Peterborough City Environment Trust Festival 2016. We created giant versions from my designs on 6-foot boards that were exhibited across the city. As part of designingin a new website: www.northartcraft.com I decided that it would be interesting to take these leaf designs and make them as small as I could. These miniatures will form the start of a series of leaf designs. Each papercut has been layered in three colours and measures 6cm x 7cm
Digital Art
2020
Many projects contain elements of digital processing and reprocessing. Playing with how authentic mark making can be represented across digital platforms is an area of interest and research. I employ a range of technologies from scanners to laser cutting and produce work on tablets, phones & personal computers. I have included a flow diagram of this process at the top of the page.
